Natalia (49) is standing by the bus terminal where she is volunteering with the Latvian youth organization ‘Young Folks’. The organization is currently involved in trying to unite Ukrainian youth with Latvian youth and helping the fleeing Ukrainians on their transit in Latvia. Natalia came to Latvia already back in April (2022) when she left her hometown of Kherson which was occupied until recently by the Russian forces because of its big strategic importance.
The connection to home
Natalia explains that, “Kherson is my home. I feel very strongly that it is my city, it is where my heart is.” She didn’t want to leave, and in the beginning of the invasion, Natalia was engaged in volunteering in her hometown. She could help out, Natalia explains, because she is very stress resistant and has great organizational skills. Those skills come from her old job in distribution where she used to manage around 60 employees. Now, she has lost her business and is not sure if the production sites they used are even still there. A lot is being stolen by the Russians, and a lot of places have been repurposed.
Natalia
We were reclaiming that Kherson is Ukraine. We wanted to protest the Russian invasion.
Natalia explains that in the beginning, they could do small strikes and meetings. “We were reclaiming that Kherson is Ukraine. We wanted to protest the Russian invasion. But at some point, you feel like you can’t do it anymore. You can’t breathe. I became afraid that I would do something that I didn’t want to allow myself to do because I have a kid.”
Volunteering in Latvia
Now, Natalia is volunteering in Latvia. When she first came here, she went to the seaside to try to calm her senses down again, but she quickly realized that she is not a person who can just sit still and do nothing. Her work at ‘Young Folks’ is not really work though, she states, “it is an opportunity to use my skills to help people and to do something for Ukraine from afar.”
